The Best Ever Bread Pudding

Bread cubes are combined with eggs, scalded milk, sugar and cornstarch to make this dessert. Options are given for variations--a chocolate and chocolate chip bread pudding.

Ingredients:

  • 3 eggs, beaten
  • 3 1/2 cups of soft bread cubes, use fresh bread only
  • 3 cups of scalded milk
  • 2/3 cup of sugar
  • 1 tablespoon of butter
  • 1/4 teaspoon of salt
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons of cornstarch

Method

Beat together eggs, sugar, salt, and cornstarch. Add vanilla and bread cubes, then gradually pour in the scalded milk, mixing as you pour. Put the mixture into a well-greased pan, bake in preheated 350 degree oven for 45 minutes to 1 hour until firm. Brush with melted butter during the baking.

Notes: Serve with a raspberry sauce -- an easy one is to take a jar of your favorite raspberry jam, and warm it to make a sauce. Can add 2 cups of chocolate chips to the sugar mixture to make a chocolate chip bread pudding, or 3 tablespoons of cocoa for a chocolate bread pudding.

Number of servings: 10
