The best part of this is that you tailor the cookie messages, just like the ones on typical Valentine candy hearts, to your family or loved ones.
 

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla
  • 2 tsp grated lemon rind
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 2 1/2 cup sifted flour
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • For Icing:
  • Powdered sugar
  • Food color
  • Water

Method

For the cookies: Cream butter and sugar thoroughly. Add egg, vanilla and lemon rind. Beat until mixture is light and fluffy. Sift dry ingredients. Stir into creamed mixture with the milk. Divide dough in half. Chill 1 hour. Roll out half of the dough, on floured board, keeping the rest chilled until needed. Roll dough 1/4 inch thick. Cut out dough with heart shaped cookie cutter and place on greased baking sheet, a half inch apart. For the icing: Mix powdered sugar with a tiny bit of water to icing consistency. Add food coloring for appropriate pastel colors.
