Chocolate Orange Pecan Pie

This twist on a classic filling has pecans & chopped semisweet chocolate, flavored with orange peel. It's baked in a buttery-rich pastry crust.
 

Ingredients

  • Crust:
  • 6 oz butter
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • Zest of 1/4 orange
  • Pinch salt
  • 1/4 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 1/2 cups flour
  • ....
  • Filling:
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 tbsp flour
  • Pinch salt
  • Zest of 1/4 orange
  • 1/2 cup dark corn syrup
  • 1/2 cup light corn syrup
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 cup chopped toasted pecans
  • 1/8 cup (2 Tbsp) chopped semisweet chocolate

Method

Using an electric mixer, beat butter and sugar together until softened then add orange zest, salt and vanilla. Beat in eggs one at a time. Add flour; mix at low speed until dough comes together. Refrigerate until firm. Roll out and line pie plate. Line crust with foil; fill with baking weights or dried beans. Bake at 350 degrees for 15 minutes. Cool and remove foil. Using mixer, beat sugar and butter until softened. Mix in flour, salt, and orange zest. Slowly add both corn syrups and vanilla extract. Beat in eggs at low speed just until combined. Sprinkle pecans and chocolate into pie crust. Fill just below rim with filling. Bake at 350 degrees about 1 hour or until set.

 

Notes: Nice change to a Southern Classic. Pecans, chocolate and orange go great in this pie.
