Black Bottoms

These bars have brownie-like bottom topped with dollops of sweetened cream cheese.
 

Ingredients

  • 1 8oz. package softened cream cheese 1 unbeaten egg
  • 1&1/3 cup sugar
  • 1&1/2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/3 cooking oil
  • 1 tbsp. vinegar
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract
  • around 8oz. semisweet chocolate chips

Method

In a small bowl, combine cream cheese, the egg, and 1/3 cup of the sugar. Beat until smooth. In a larger bowl, mix all the flour, the cocoa, salt, and the remaining 1 cup of sugar. In yet another small bowl, mix the water, the cooking oil, vinegar, and vanilla. Mix the liquid mixture with the dry. This new mixture will be rather soupy. Pour the soupy chocolate mix in a greased and floured 9x13 pan. Plop spoonfuls of the cream cheese mixture on top. Sprinkle chocolate chips over top, and bake in a preheated 350 degree oven for 30-35 minutes or until golden brown and done all the way through when tested.

 

Notes: Make sure to plop the cream cheese on top. It doesn't taste the same if it is spread evenly over the surface. Trust me on this one...
